EVA WALSH (INTERVIEW) –THE ALLSTON PUDDING

On November 5th Eva Walsh will be releasing her first solo album, Story Book. Coinciding with the release of her album will be a show at the Middle East Upstairs. Walsh, originally from Buffalo, Minnesota, studied performance violin at Vanderbilt before migrating to Boston. Since then, Walsh has submerged herself in Boston’s folk and indi music scenes: playing shows and recording songs all over town with bands such as My Politic and Steph Barrak. The ten-song album, Story Book, was recorded at Black Hat Music, located in Medford Mass. The recording of the album took about one year to finish. According to Walsh, it’s a, “One stop recording studio for artists who would not be able to put out a professional product for the same cost anywhere else.” Josh Cohen, owner/recording engineer, not only helped produce and record the album, but was also featured on it. Walsh took care of the ukulele, synth, all of the string arrangements, the vocals and the harmonies while Cohen tackled the rest.
Walsh’s music is her beautiful outlet in which she shares herself through vivid story telling over mood matching instrumental accompaniment. I’ve seen Walsh perform a good amount of times but what really does it for me is her vocals. Her voice blows me away. Her voice is incredibly soothing. It has the ability to make her listeners’ hearts beat slow like Xanax to a tweaker. Another aspect of Walsh’s music that I love is her fiddling. Walsh’s fiddle playing is top notch: educated from her performance violin days but also soulful and caring from her personality and creativity. It really has added another level to every performance I’ve seen of hers. Even while playing with other bands, it is easy to see how their performances wouldn’t be as complete of an experience without her fiddling. Finally, Walsh’s smile and laugh alone are worth the price of admission. Walsh is a very bubbly, friendly person and when she laughs you can’t help but be captured by it. Story Book comes out November 5th.
